Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS)

School-wide Positive Interventions Behavioral Supports (SWPBIS) is a school-wide student behavioral management plan. It proactively teaches positive behavioral expectations that will enable the success of all students at Washington. The intent of SWPBIS is to increase our capacity to reduce school disruptions and to ensure equity and excellence in educating every student.

Here is how it works. Students are trained in how to be a member of the Washington Middle School Continental ARMY. During ARMY training sessions, students are taught the Continental Code of expected behavior at Washington. The Continental ARMY Code stands for: Accountable, Respectful, Motivated to learn, and do Your best. The Continental Code is used to teach expected behavior in all areas of the building and at all times.

For choosing to serve as an ARMY member, students can earn ARMY coins which can be turned in at the office for a chance to win a prize. Three coins, each with a student’s name written on it are drawn out of our Continental Drum for daily, weekly and quarterly prizes. Some of the prizes include: breakfast with five friends, homework pass, TV, bicycle, electronic keyboard, gift cards, I-pod, X-box, free popcorn, acoustic guitar, fun coupons and more! Should a student choose not to follow the Continental Code, he or she will be choosing to receive a negative consequence for his or her actions instead of a chance to win a prize. The student is given a Minor Incident Report (MIR), which can result in lunch detention, after school detention and even out of school suspension.

The faculty and staff at Washington are excited about our SWPBIS plan and the positive school climate which results from it. If you have any questions, please contact the office at 477-8983.
